Hands up how many people have purchased a Da Hong Pao full of expectation and have been deflated by the experience. Sitting from my office I can't count hands but I am willing to bet that there are quite a few of you out there.

The experience tends to be the same - rich and robust smell, a gorgeous colour but a bit of a flat taste. Maybe the second infusion will be better once all that roasted aroma is softer? No, it tastes even flatter. Cardboard and charcoal.

The fact is that the majority of the Da Hong Pao out on the market is not true cultivar Da Hong Pao. In this video I explain the little tricks of the sellers and guide you towards tasting some real Big Red Robe varieties.
